INHERE has recently undertaken several measures on INHERE has recently undertaken several measures on agriculture improvement, fodder, natural resource availability and management in the Dudhatoli catchment region of river Ramganga (W). 150 Quintal Napier grass plantation was done in 12 villages to increase the availability of fodder at the village level and to reduce seasonal pressure on the Dudhatoli forests.

To promote livelihood opportunities, plantation of 500 Big Cardamom plants in 8 villages and 2000 Tea Plants in 1 village has been done with the help of Uttarakhand Tea Development Board and local community members. Simultaneously, 2000 Citrus varieties of Hill Lemon and Malta has been planted to increase the natural resource base and add to the local biodiversity of the region.

We hope that sustained efforts in the improvement of agriculture will create alternate livelihood opportunities for smallholder mountain farmers. This will not only support agricultural interventions, reduce pressure on natural resources in the Dudhatoli catchment, but will also promote agri- based livelihood options in the Uttarakhand Himalayas.

We would like to sincerely thank the Food And Agri We would like to sincerely thank the Food And Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations for selecting and publishing our Amaranth laddu recipe in the 'Mountain Recipes: Cooks in High Places: Mountain Specialties' booklet. The Amaranth laddu recipe is a collective effort undertaken by our founder Mr. Bharat Bisht and staff member Ms. Divya Agarwal. It is a part of the product development process in one of our projects focussing on value addition of local bio- resources.

The selection has been made amongst one of the top 30 Mountain recipes across the world during the ‘International Mountain Day, 2019’ online event organised by the FAO. The booklet offers a visual delight of mountain recipes ranging from the high Andes of Latin America to the Himalayas of the Asia Pacific. It also helps us remind the importance of food as a representative of our cultures, traditions and most importantly our geographies.

Paddy season is on! While farmers in the rainfed Paddy season is on!

While farmers in the rainfed villages in the hills wait for monsoon showers, those in the valley region of Chaukhutia have completed sowing. With a well-connected network of irrigated canals constructed by INHERE with support of community members and state govt. in past years, it has highly benefitted the farmers in boosting agricultural production.

Ever wondered the taste of growing one's own organ Ever wondered the taste of growing one's own organic farm produce in a chemical-free natural environment?
We at INHERE emphasize on growing our own food for daily consumption to promote a culture of self- reliance and reduce dependency on commercial crops which often involve chemicals and pesticides to boost production.
The organic farm at our Chinoni campus not only serve freshly plucked veggies to our platter but also is a demonstrative unit for farmers of the mountain areas as well. Whatever is grown over the week is sold on Saturday at the 'weekend mart' thereby institutionalising the concept of 'farm to food' for the staff members. All credit to our staff member Pawan Kaira (in the picture) for the brilliant idea.

Puran Da ( in pictures) has been associated with us for many years now and takes care of the wholesome meal that is to be grown in the farm unit.
Let's hope to a future of growing our own food to aspire for an organic and healthy lifestyle!

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, in 2018, witnessed a strong a Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, in 2018, witnessed a strong assertion of mountain people’s concerns. The World Mountain Forum acknowledged mountain communities as some of the most vulnerable and marginalized groups. One in three mountain people in developing countries is vulnerable to food security. Developing nations host 90% of world’s entire mountain population. The Forum’s recommendations called for mountain-specific courses at university curricula on national level, whilst mainstreaming mountain geographies in development policies. It called for transboundary cooperation among mountain people for closer collaboration with stakeholders at all levels, akin to functioning of Small Island Developing States. The recommendation also demanded legitimate inclusion of mountain people in international conventions through policy framework and a united front of myriad mountain voices, with great emphasis on women as custodians of mountains.

The scope of #ThimphuDeclaration was expansive – from health of mountain women (insurance, sexual and reproductive rights) to right over resources. It is therefore landmark in encompassing issues of domestic violence, globalization, armed conflicts and human trafficking of mountain women and children. The declaration is an urgent, strongly worded message from a marginalized gender in the throes of the most sensitive geography on the planet. One of the oldest cultivated crops, its cultivation requires less irrigation and is packed with nutrition. Grown between 2000-8000 ft in the Himalayan mountain region, #Amaranth dates back centuries and has been an integral part of the cultural fabric of Uttarakhand. It is consumed during fasting in the Hindu festive seasons as 'Laddus' and 'Kheer'. Also, available as a snack, it is consumed by both adults and kids alike.
